Reading a prospect's stat line when you're buying the card

The bridge between the baseball and the card: what a stat line can and cannot tell a buyer, and the context that changes its meaning entirely.

Age relative to level tells a card buyer more than any rate stat on the line, and a good-looking line without that context is the most common trap.

You are not buying a stat line. You are buying the market's future opinion of a player, and the stat line is the main thing that opinion will move on. That makes reading one a card skill, not just a baseball one — and the way a buyer should read it is different from the way a fan does.

Rule one: a number without a level and an age means nothing

A .900 OPS is not a fact about a hitter. It is a fact about a hitter at a level, at an age, in a park, in a league. A 22-year-old posting it in Triple-A and a 22-year-old posting it in a complex league are not describing the same player, and the second one is much closer to ordinary.

This is why age relative to the level is the single most useful number in minor-league baseball, and why it deserves more weight than any rate stat. A player who is young for his level has beaten the schedule; a player who is old for his level has to out-hit an age advantage he does not have. Being two years young for a level is a stronger signal than a large slice of the batting line.

Rule two: skills outlast results

Contact and plate discipline — how often a hitter strikes out and how often he walks — stabilise faster and travel better than batting average or slugging. They are closer to a description of what the player can do; the rest carries a lot of what happened to him.

A useful habit: read the strikeout rate first, then the walk rate, then everything else. A hitter with a strikeout problem at Low-A usually has a bigger one at Double-A, because that is exactly the jump where pitchers can throw a breaking ball for a strike when behind in the count.

Rule three: pitchers are a different question, not a harder one

ERA is close to useless as a prospect signal — it depends heavily on the defence behind the pitcher and the sequence in which hits arrived. Strikeout rate minus walk rate is the most informative single number for a minor-league arm, and games started matters separately: a starter's ceiling is worth more than a reliever's, and cards are priced on ceiling.

A trap worth naming

Never read a pitcher's numbers through a hitter's frame. A walk rate is bad for a hitter to have low and good for a pitcher; a strikeout rate is the reverse. It sounds obvious written down, and it is a very common error inside tools that score both with one model.

Rule four: compare to the cohort, not to the league

“Above average” is only meaningful against the right crowd. The comparison that matters is against other players at the same level playing the same position, and it needs enough of them to be a real distribution rather than a handful. Given a small enough crowd, a percentile is arithmetic dressed up as a judgement.

What a stat line will never tell you

  • Whether the card is cheap. The player and the price are two independent questions, and the second one is answered with comps, not with an OPS.
  • Whether the org will promote him. Roster crunch, options and service-time incentives decide a lot of call-ups, and none of them appear in a batting line.
  • Injury and role risk. A converted reliever and a durable starter can post the same line for a season.

How we apply this

Every skill score on a player page here is a percentile against that player's own same-level cohort, and it is withheld rather than shown when the cohort is too small to support the precision the number implies. Hitters and pitchers are scored by two separate models, so a pitcher's rating is never a hitter's rating in disguise. Age relative to level is scored in its own right and shown beside the skills rather than blended into them, along with the box-score result — both are displayed and deliberately excluded from the overall figure, because one is context and the other is what the skills produced.

Two stat lines are much easier to read against each other than in isolation, which is most of why a single line is so hard to judge.
